Description

(Comedy Drama Feature, Drama Short) A misunderstood sexual encounter unravels the life of a lonely female security guard and her deadbeat paramour: Welcome to Wexford Plaza, our VAFF 21 CLOSING NIGHT PRESENTATION from Toronto-based Canadian filmmaker Joyce Wong. Wong’s award-winning dark slice-of-life comedy is based on her memories of growing up in Scarborough, Ontario—isolated and friendless, Betty works as a security guard at a deteriorating strip mall and welcomes an act of random kindness from a makeup salesman, with unintended results. Winner of the Jury Award, Best Narrative at CAAMfest 2017, the jury found Wexford Plaza “…a quirky and offbeat comedy that manages to balance a critique of mundane suburban culture with poetic beauty. With a well rounded portrayal of gender, race and sexuality…[a] nuanced, witty and moving film.” A VAFF Best Canadian Feature Award nominee.

Preceded by Dean Yamada’s short film Touring, in which two teenage boys dealing with broken family situations connect, commiserate, and venture out to find an unorthodox way to release their anger.
