Who wants to be a Talent to Watch? – Nov. 1

One of the most coveted ways to get your first feature film made in Canada is through funding by the Telefilm Talent to Watch Program.  We’ve invited this year’s recipients to talk about their journey, the challenges they face to get there, and what it takes to succeed. A representative of Telefilm is also present to answer any questions you may have regarding the Program and others on offer.

Joella Cabalu 

Joella Cabalu is a Filipino-Canadian documentary filmmaker based in Vancouver. Since her debut as producer and director on It Runs in the Family, she has produced compelling short documentaries including Do I Have Boobs Now?, On Falling and currently producing her first feature documentary Back Home with support from the Telefilm Talent to Watch fund.

Jason Karman

Jason Karman is a mid-career short-film screenwriter-director, producer. A graduate of the Master of Fine Arts in Film Production and Creative Writing program at the University of British Columbia, Jason is currently working on his first feature, Golden Delicious, an official selection of Telefilm Canada’s 2020-2021 Talent to Watch program.

Jerome Yoo

Jerome Yoo is an emerging Korean-Canadian writer, and director. Jerome made his directing debut in 2018 with his Storyhive funded short, GONG JU, followed by IDOLS NEVER DIE, a coming of age, K-Pop film. He is set to direct his first feature film, MONGRELS, a portrait of an immigrant Korean family uprooting themselves in the rural prairies in 2021.

Lawrence Le Lam

Lawrence Le Lam is a filmmaker from Richmond, BC who loves exploring underground worlds. His underground hip hop short, Cypher won Best Period Piece at Hollyshorts Film Festival 2018. Lawrence participated in the TIFF Talent Lab in 2017 and is currently developing his first feature, The Chinatown Diner.

Lauren Davis

As Telefilm Canada’s Regional Feature Film Executive for the Western Region, Lauren Davis is responsible for supporting emerging talent through production and post-production investments in lower-budget feature films. Lauren joined Telefilm in 1998 after having worked as an independent producer. Over the last 15 years, she has held a number of management positions within the television, feature film and business-process management teams.
