What is the “Red Packet Challenge?” (RPC)

The RPC is a fun contest for anyone with a video camera or smartphone, as well as for trained and experienced filmmakers to showcase their storytelling skills in an ultra-short format. Vancouver Asian Film Festival offers an educational experience and an opportunity to showcase their work live on the big screen, online and to potential distributors.

Choose the Category, Pick a Theme, Get creative and Make the Film!

Choose 1 Category per video submission:

  1. Ultra-short consists of a 6- 15 seconds maximum video (Vine or / and Instagram style).
  2. Micro-film can be 1 – 3 minutes maximum video format.

Pick 1 of 5 themes to incorporate in your video, (Believe, Connect, Engage, Share, Support).

Get creative and earn bonus subjective points from the Celebrity Judges by including “Asian-Flair” to your video. This can be a re-creation or homage to Asian pop-culture, or anything that is recognizable as Asian like food, shopping, cute children or pet videos, or food/cooking related.

Use any camera (smart phone, tablet, camera, video camcorder, etc.) and entertain us with your video. Prizes up for grabs: 1st Prize $800; 2nd Prize $300; 3rd Prize $200, plus rental equipment prizes, luxury products, electronic products, restaurant gift certificates and many more. The Ultimate Fan Favourite Award winner in each category will also receive a $100 cash prize.

Mark your calendar, You or Your team* must submit the film/video between July 26 – Aug 16, 2015 as many as you like. $10 per entry or $50 per 8 entries in any category.

All video submissions from “Ultra Short – (6-15 seconds)” will be open for public voting from August 19, 2015  until  August 23, 11:59:59 pm. This will determine the winner of the Ultimate Fan Favourite Award in this category.

Our celebrity judges, CTV News Anchor & award winning reporter Mi-Jung Lee, Real Housewives of Vancouver Reiko Mackenzie, Casting Director Judy Lee,  Fairchild Host & Vancouver Film Critics Circle’s Tony Ma, CBC’s Vancouver News Anchor, Miyoung Lee will select the top 3 winners in each category and they will be announced at the screening, along with the winners of the Ultimate Fan Favourite Award in each category. With a total of 8 prizes to be awarded, the top 16 – 20 adjudicated videos will have a theatrical premiere at the #VAFFRPC 2015 screening event. Get ready to unleash your “Asian Flair” and join us for a Screening and Awards event filled filled with fun, films and friends  at the prestigious Vancity Theatre on Thursday August 27, 2015

* Asian Content Fulfillment – VAFF supports our diverse communities in British Columbia, and the mandate is to support diversity in filmmaking. Any submitted video that does not meet the Asian Content Fulfillment criteria is disqualified from the contest and is ineligible for the #VAFFRPC 2015 Screening Event at Vancity/VIFF Theatre:

  • The Designated Representative or at least one Team Key Creative Member (i.e. Writer, Director, Director of Photography/Camera Operator, Producer) must be from a visible minority/of Asian or part Asian heritage, OR
  • At least one lead actor/subject appearing in the video submission (one per video, if submitting more than one) must be of Asian/part Asian heritage, OR
  • The subject matter of the video submission (per video submitted, if more than one) must be of Asian/part Asian origin.
