VAFF Industry Panel Series – Asian Leading Men in Hollywood

We are finally seeing Asian men in starring roles of superhero or action hero such as Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), in the upcoming Mortal Kombat (2021), film adaptation, or romantic lead as in Last Christmas (2019). Negative stereotypes of Asian men, long-perpetuated by Hollywood, seem to have finally been broken. Or have they?

Curtis Lum

Curtis Lum is an actor and producer born in Vancouver, BC. Named one of Canada’s Rising Stars by The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, he earned his recognition for his work in “Prison Break”, “Supergirl”, and FreeForm’s hit show “Siren”. He continues to push the envelope with his artistry, inspiring others and bringing his endeavors onto a worldwide platform.

 

Osric Chau

Osric Chau is an actor best known for his role in the CW series SUPERNATURAL, BBC America series DIRK GENTLY’S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY, and Roland Emmerich’s 2012, and recently joined the cast of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS as the Atom. Osric is also involved in many independent film projects whether as an actor, producer, director, or writer, and most recently produced of EMPTY BY DESIGN. 

 

Tarun Karem

Hailing from Surrey, BC, Tarun Keram left his university plans behind to pursue his dreams of acting in 2010. Since committing to his craft, he has starred alongside Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana in STAR TREK BEYOND, as well as garnered guest star spots on numerous popular TV series such as Supernatural, The Magicians, and The Twilight Zone. His current project is the highly-anticipated TV adaption of Stephen King’s THE STAND. 

 

Tim Lam

Tim Lam is a digital storyteller and marketing strategist based in Vancouver, BC. He believes everyone has a story worth telling and wants to be the first to hear yours. It’s driven his interest in the media, tech, and social impact space that’s led him to his work in digital marketing for Thrive Digital and his role as the Lead Editor for Cold Tea Collective, a publication that highlights stories for and by Asian millennials.
